요약

양전자 발견의 업적으로 1936년 노벨물리학상을 수상했던 물리학자 앤더슨과 그의 제자인 네더마이어가 1941- 1953년 기간 동안에 또 다른 업적인 뮤온의 발견으로 노벨물리학상 추천을 받았던 추천 기록을 분석하였다. 앤더 슨과 네더마이어는 이 기간 동안에 각각 18회와 20회 추천을 받았는데, 앤더슨의 지도교수는 이들 2명을 공동 수 상자로 10회 추천하였고, 앤더슨은 네더마이어를 5회 단독 수상자로 추천하였으며, 앤더슨과 같은 해에 노벨상을 공동으로 수상하였던 물리학자는 앤더슨을 1순위로 한 공동 수상자로 5회 추천을 하였다. 노벨상을 한 번 더 받 기에 충분한 훌륭한 업적임에도 불구하고 수상에 성공하지 못 했던 이유는, 당시에 노벨상을 받을 만한 다른 뛰 어난 연구들이 많이 있었기 때문에, 최초로 동일 분야에서 두 번째 노벨상을 주는 것에 과학자 사회에서 부담을 가지고 있었다고 볼 수 있다. 노벨상 수상 이후에도 다시 다른 업적으로 추천을 받았던 다른 분야의 과학자들에 대해서도 연구를 확장한다면, 노벨상 수상자들의 융합적 특성을 살펴보는 데 큰 도움이 될 것이라고 생각한다.

Abstract

We analyzed the nomination archive of physicist Anderson, who won the 1936 Nobel Prize in Physics for the discovery of the positron, and his student Neddermeyer, who were recommended for the Nobel Prize in Physics between 1941 and 1953 for the discovery of the muon, another achievement. Anderson and Neddermeyer were nominated 18 and 20 times, respectively, during this period. Anderson's advisor nominated them 10 times as joint winners, and Anderson recommended Neddermayer as the sole winner 5 times. A physicist who shared the Nobel Prize in the same year as Anderson nominated 5 times as a joint winner, with Anderson as first priority. Although it was an excellent achievement worthy of receiving another Nobel Prize, the reason why it did not succeed was because there was a lot of other outstanding research at the time that deserved the Nobel Prize, so it can be said that the scientific community felt burdened by awarding a second Nobel Prize in the same field for the first time. I think it would be of great help in examining the convergent characteristics of Nobel Prize winners if we expanded our research to include scientists in other fields who were nominated for other works even after winning the Nobel Prize.
