본 연구는 인류세 담론 내에서 차별화된 개념인 플랜테이션세(Plantationocene) 개념을 해양 환경과 수산양식업 에 적용함으로써 이론적 논의를 확장한다. 다나 해러웨이(Donna Haraway), 애나 칭(Anna Tsing) 등이 발전시킨 플랜테이션세 개념은 비판적 대서양학, 태평양학, 캐리비언 연구의 학문적 전통과 교차하며, 식민주의, 인종 자본 주의, 자원 추출의 역사적 맥락 내에서 환경 변화를 분석한다. 기후위기 시대에 어획 어업의 한계를 인식하면서 도, 대안으로 제시되는 양식업이 여전히 대량 생산-소비, 시장 의존성, 원거리 소비, 자연의 객체화로 특징지어지 는 추출주의적 패러다임에 갇혀 있음을 지적한다. 한국 양식업, 특히 제주 광어 양식을 사례로, 환경 조건을 무시 한 이식, 집약적 단일 작물 재배, 수출 지향적 상품화, 위계적 노동 구조와 같은 플랜테이션세 특성이 현대 양식 시스템에 내재되어 있음을 분석한다.

Abstract

This study expands theoretical discussions by applying the concept of the Plantationocene, a differentiated concept within Anthropocene discourse, to marine environments and aquaculture. The Plantationocene concept, developed by Donna Haraway, Anna Tsing, and others, intersects with scholarly traditions in Critical Atlantic Studies, Pacific Studies, and Caribbean Studies, collectively analyzing environmental change within historical contexts of colonialism, racial capitalism, and resource extraction. While recognizing the limitations of capture fisheries in an era of climate crisis, this research points out that aquaculture, often presented as an alternative, remains entrenched in extractivist paradigms characterized by mass production-consumption, market dependency, distant consumption, and objectification of nature. Using Korean aquaculture, particularly Jeju olive flounder farming, as a case study, we analyze how Plantationocene characteristics-transplantation that disregards environmental conditions, intensive monocropping, export-oriented commodification, and hierarchical labor structures-are embedded in modern aquaculture systems.
